Servants & masters.

Some thoughts on the differing leadership styles that have been evident in the proven winners who have contributed to my coaching journey…

In my experience the ‘servant’ leadership approach offers huge merit in creating a level of care & cohesion that can truly be the difference in pressurised high performance environments.
But, in addition to the value of strong 1:1 relationships & the creation of an unwritten trust, the bigger picture requires consideration.

The truly influential leaders I have worked alongside have also integrated two other key leadership principles in their armoury.

1) Transformational leadership
Specifically the ability to not only see what others or a group are capable of but also help them realise & achieve it.
The vision & understanding to appreciate, “if you get better WE get better”. This can also be applied to I get better, we get better of course!
The secret is then in the how… the best can help others grow in a myriad of ways.
My approach in brief is to REALISE, AGREE, ACTION (all based on outstanding communication… but that’s one for another week).

1)Strategic leadership
If individuals, the process and even whole departments/teams are transforming, then a vision & strategy have to be in place for prolonged success.
Without a clear & defined strategy we may be ‘high performing’ at any given time point, but how do we sustain and evolve this as outcomes change in the ever challenging world of business & sport.

In conclusion:

1) I’d say many of us don’t realise our full potential, including me! But by engaging with transformational thinkers, impossible is nothing!

1) Taking the time to contemplate what YOUR robust strategy looks like & what the actions are to achieve & exceed the goals on this journey.

1) Mastery in leadership & life is a never ending journey, we can all be better than yesterday & should strive to be better again tomorrow.

1) Surround yourself by the best.
